"Hip replacement"

About: Royal Perth Hospital

(as the patient),

In early 2021 I attended an appointment at Royal Perth hospital in orthopaedic clinic where I was was told that I needed a hip replacement, I was told I would be placed on the waiting list. 2023 I contacted Royal Perth hospital as I had not heard from them, I was told I was on the waiting list. This year I again contacted the hospital only to be told they couldn't find me on the list, recently I contacted them again was told that I was back on the list but on the bottom of the list, I said this is not fair as my mobility has deteriorated in the last four years, I suffer from depression living with constant pain how do put a complaint into the hospital, I understand this was somebody else's error but it is me paying the price.

Dear bluewm84

I was deeply sorry to read of your deteriorating mobility while waiting for hip replacement surgery at Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) and acknowledge the impact this is having on your mental health.

Without knowing your details, it is difficult to comment on your particular situation; however, it does appear from reading your story, that an error may have been made in the removal of your original booking and if this is the case we would consider returning you to an appropriate place on the waitlist rather than at the bottom. I would encourage you to contact the Patient Experience team on (08) 9224 1637 or via email: RPBG.feedback@health.wa.gov.au so a review of your case can be undertaken.

All waitlisted patients are clinically managed using the first on / first off booking principle (meaning those who have been waiting longest are seen soonest). The Royal Perth Bentley Group (RPBG) is experiencing a high demand for orthopaedic surgery and the Elective Surgery Waitlist team regularly audit the waitlist to ensure those patients that are listed, still require surgery. In addition, the RPBG continually looks at strategies to reduce the wait time for patients, with those identified as suitable for surgery at another hospital with a shorter wait time, selected for transfer to reduce their waiting time.

In the meantime, I urge you to contact your General Practitioner who is best placed to provide you with support in a community setting, which may include non-operative (conservative) management of your condition and pain.

The RPBG strives to deliver the best care in a timely manner and I would like to sincerely apologise that this was not your experience of our service.

I wish you all the best with your continuing healthcare journey.

Kind regards
