My child was ambulance transferred to Busselton Health Campus from their local primary school after falling from a height onto their back and a few seconds later going unconscious and falling flat on their face. My child arrived in spinal precautions.
The nursing staff were warm, engaging and an absolute credit to the department. Their interactions with my child were supportive and gentle and they really liked Chelsea.
Unfortunately I was less impressed with the doctor. Their only assessment was global palpation of my child's spine with, I recall, very leading questioning, this is not sore is it?.
The doctor then asked for panadol and nurofen and had my child lie supine for 4 hours post fall and reassessed with pain relief on board, again a general palpation of their spine with seemingly leading questioning.
My child's pain had improved so the doctor cleared them to mobilise. They did not conduct any neurological screening, concussion assessment or imaging.
I felt the doctor's assessment was very rudimentary and insufficient for them to confidently clear my child of a spinal injury. I asked the doctor to screen my child more thoroughly due to the pain they were reporting and they completed a chest auscultation (relevance?) and felt that imaging was unwarranted. I believe the doctor was unaware of my own health background and that I had conducted my own thorough assessment of my child to ensure I was confident they could mobilise without permanent damage prior to getting up.
I recall the doctor provided no education on signs to look out for or when to be concerned and re-present. Based on my experience, I fear for other families who may not have knowledge in the area and have their child present, mobilise and then discharge seemingly without adequate assessment or education.
