"Carers wellbeing not considered"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department Patient Assisted Travel Scheme - WACHS Goldfields

(as a carer),

I act in a caring capacity for my spouse, who is travelling through a cancer journey and my parents who are aging.  I also interact often in a professional capacity with patients who have exited Kalgoorlie ED.

The uncaring and callous nature of some interactions, with ER in particular, has definitely impacted my mental health with my last two visits to ED as a carer causing  feelings of anxiety that are bordering on panic attacks.

I refuse outright to attend cancer appointments with my spouses at KRH.

And it just doesn’t end, my spouse is to travel to Perth for a PET scan soon, a scan they have had a severe reaction to multiple times in the past and a scan not available in Kalgoorlie. I can’t travel with them because of work commitments and PATS wont pay for an additional night at the cancer council accommodation, which yes we can pay for a hotel at our own expense and that is the plan.

If they do have a severe reaction (likely) it means they have to ask for help  in a timely manner and while I’ll do my best to monitor them from Kalgoorlie and I know hotel staff will not have the same response as cancer council staff.  Knowing my spouse, because they are feeling sick, they will push themselves to drive home.

I’m really aware that this saves KRH $90 and I’m literally losing nights of sleep wondering if my spouse's going to make it home this week.

My parent outright refuses to go to ER despite being directed by health direct three times and while I sympathise, the staff at ER talk to my parent like a toddler, it means they are getting sicker.  They had a brain tumour removed and absolutely no follow up has been done, no scans to see if it returned.  Nada,  so it’s hard to argue that there is any point in my parent attending. I believe they're right, there’s going to be nothing done at ER and the chances of referrals being actioned is zero.

In my opinion, putting complaints in is waste of time, with at best informal responses and more likely a black hole of no communication.

I fully understand and believe that as a carer that KRH considers me as a prop to roll out as “end of life support”. (Direct quote) and beside those points to be ignored.

Dear Wishididntcare

Thank you for reaching out to tell us about the experiences that you and others that you are caring for have had with our services. I agree that being a carer is a very challenging role, especially when it involves supporting others to access services such as specialist appointments or our Emergency Department. I am sorry to hear about the interactions you have had and the impact that this is having on your own health and wellbeing. Please make sure to reach out to your GP or health provider to ask for help and support for yourself if needed. You may also find it useful to contact Carers WA. They are a not-for-profit, community-based organisation that are dedicated to improving the lives of carers. You can call them on 1300 227 377 or visit www.carerswa.asn.au.

Regarding the Patient Assistant Travel Scheme, also known as PATS, it sounds like you and your spouse are quite familiar with the course of making applications and the eligibility criteria. However, I thought it might be useful for others reading this post to provide the link to the information at WA Country Health Service - Patient Assisted Travel Scheme - PATS. This includes local contact details and an overview of all the PATS processes, including how to request consideration for an exceptional ruling: WA Country Health Service - PATS processes explained.

If you would like a review of your parent to be arranged by one of our medical teams, a referral could be sent by their GP. Or if you prefer you could email your parent’s details to GSEGCG@health.wa.gov.au and I could request one of our doctors to reach out directly and discuss the best next steps.

I hope this information can help you as well as others in our community to overcome the challenge of accessing care for those you are supporting.

Kind regards

Alicia
