"Excessive blood drawn from baby"

About: PathWest Albany Collection Centre

(as a parent/guardian),

Took my 3month old, <5kg baby for blood to be taken. Required 8 vials of blood. Phlebotomist used inappropriate equipment for a baby (vacutainer) and despite repeated prompts from me that paediatric blood tubes should be used, I was told it was too hard to do it with those tubes. Eventually told them that I am a doctor and frequently take blood from babies, and that the amount of blood they would be removing by using adult tubes was dangerous for a baby this size. Switched equipment, but still tried to take excessive amount of blood (20ml syringe) and still used adult tubes. I had to firmly tell them to stop. They seemed to have no understanding of the blood volume of a baby this size or how much of it they were removing.
