"Busselton Hospital is very accessible for assistance dog handlers!"

About: Busselton Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My partner had a heavy fall off a horse and broke 3 ribs, and Busselton Hospital’s emergency department treated us both with the utmost respect and care. He’s an ambo so he brings them patients a lot but it was his first experience there as a patient and they were absolutely fantastic.

I am an assistance dog handler and in order to be able to be there to support him I needed my assistance dog with me. Hospital staff asked which of us my dog was there to assist in order to know which of us he had to stay with, and that was that - a wonderful experience considering access to needed medical care (either as the patient or as the patient’s family member) is a source of major anxiety for a lot of AD handlers. Our access was never questioned or challenged and I left feeling welcomed and supported.

Hi gifthf53,

I am so glad that you received a warm welcome in ED with your assistance dog. I have to say that the staff do on occasion bring their own puppies/dogs into the tearoom for a brief visit every so often and they are a real morale booster.

I do hope your partner is recovering from his broken ribs and will still be able to enjoy Christmas.

I will be sure to pass on your compliment to the team. Thank you for taking the time to write to us.

Yours Sincerely,

Caroline Booker
