"Psychiatric unit"

About: Albany Health Campus / Mental Health Unit

(as a parent/guardian),

My relative was admitted voluntarily to the Psychiatric Unit. They self presented as they recognised their mental health was deteriorating. During their stay, a doctor said things like, this is not a hotel or motel, you need to talk. This is the second time this doctor has spoken to my relative like this. My relative should be treated with respect, should be spoken to nicely, should be supported to get better. My relative used to feel safe to come to hospital, but they don't feel as though they are able to come to hospital and be safe anymore.

My relative has been a patient enough times that the staff should know that they are only here to feel safe and get better. My fear is that my relative will stop turning to mental health care and one day harm himself. I want this doctor to be educated about engaging with patients in a kind manner, particularly with Aboriginal patients.

Dear skyzx39

Thank you for sharing your thoughts regarding your relative’s stay in the Psychiatric Unit.

We strive to create a welcoming and therapeutic environment for all our patients. I am pleased to hear that your relative feels comfortable self-presenting according to their needs. I was sorry to hear your concerns, and I appreciate your time and effort in providing this to us.

It was concerning that you felt your relative was disrespected and I have escalated your story to our Clinical Director. I will request the Clinical Director will speak with the medical team regarding your concerns to ensure that everyone is aware of their role in providing therapeutic care with kindness to every patient.

We take all feedback seriously and use it to inform our staff and our service. It was encouraging to receive this feedback as we value the opinion of all our patients and families.

Once again, thank you for your insights.

Regards

Matthew Little
