Having my first baby through CMP was the best experience I could have hoped for. I chose to apply for CMP and have a homebirth due to the evidence I found surrounding better outcomes for women and babies having care from a known midwife, plus planned homebirth having better outcomes for low risk women than birth in hospital.
My midwife Julie was incredibly knowledgeable and caring, and being under CMP meant my pregnancy appointments were 1 hour long so I felt well informed and any concerns listened to. I was well supported in my labour and birth, some anxiety arose during which Julie knew exactly how to calm me down. I had a beautiful waterbirth with no complications. I feel that if I weren’t under CMP and didn’t have a midwife that knew me well, my story may be different, as I feel that having trust in the person looking after me and being in my own safe space, physiological birth could unfold just as its supposed to.
I had difficulty breastfeeding due to poor latch and my baby having a tongue tie, with my baby initially not gaining enough weight. Julie was able to visit me frequently in the first 2 weeks postpartum, and then refer me to KEMH breastfeeding centre. Having her guidance during that time meant that I’ve been able to establish a great milk supply and my baby has not needed a drop of formula despite not being able to latch on my breast properly. I recommend all women wanting a low intervention birth to apply for this brilliant program!
