"Bad experience in emergency"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I presented to Bunbury Regional Hospital's emergency department just after midnight recently. I was in a lot of pain and vomiting. I have a very long history of endometriosis, and have had multiple surgeries for this. The admission staff were amazing and I was taken through quite quickly.

Once I was on a bed in the emergency ward, it took quite a while for anyone to see me. I was in a lot of pain and vomiting. A nurse had come to see me and their apparent lack of interest in my health was very obvious. They then went out to where the doctors were and started to talk about me. Myself and my parent who was with me at the time could clearly hear everything that was being said. I recall the nurse said that a doctor needed to see me because I was down there having a pity party. I was in alot of pain and at no point had they even tried to get my pain under control. I wasn't screaming or carrying on. I was upset and at this point still vomiting.

The doctors were great and managed to get my pain under control. I then needed to have a nasal gastric tube inserted. I have never had this done before so was asking questions and advised of my previous surgeries again. After 2 attempts of putting it in, the nurse went to get another nurse. I recall we could then hear them again talking poorly of me. Telling someone about how I decided to add in what surgeries I have had before they went to do it, that this is the information they need to know before they do this sort of thing and why would I even think about telling them now. I advised the admission staff of this also, so it would have been on my file.

The way this staff member spoke about me and dealt with me, made me feel like I was there just seeking attention, pain medication or just wasting there time. I felt they were not very nice. It made me feel even worse about the situation I was in.

Dear bargainqw73,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your recent visit to the Bunbury Emergency Department. I was pleased to read that you were taken through quickly and the doctors were great in getting your pain under control. I am, however, very disappointed in the way you were made to feel by nursing staff and the conversations surrounding your presentation. For this I apologise.

I would like the opportunity to investigate this further. You can contact me on (08) 9722 2257 or ivan.young@health.wa.gov.au

Alternatively, you can reach out to our Patient Liaison team via: SWfeedback@health.wa.gov.au or call us on (08) 9753 6537.

Kind regards,

Ivan Young
