"My delivery"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I had to be induced at 36weeks, had a horrendous induction, wasn’t informed properly about the potential pain. Was told that there would be discomfort with the balloon. Also, wasn’t given a choice. I was told I was getting the balloon.

As a first time mom I had no idea what I was signing up for! My pain wasn’t managed properly the night of! It was easily the worst night of my life. I did not sleep a wink.

Fortunately I was with the MGP3 and one of my midwife from my team Bri arrived and changed the course of the night! Bri probably stood for brilliant! She was amazing! She immediately acknowledged and managed my pain before proceeding with anything! I remember feeling the relief and also safe in her capable hands.

My labour was very very different from my induction. I basically slept through my labour. After being dilated my other midwife Holly took over and I continued to feel safe and looked after. Had some complications, nothing major but seeing her advocate for me whilst maintaining my wishes and getting to first hand witness her impeccable competency made me feel so very grateful that I made the choice of applying for MGP3. If I could rate them, I’d give them 5stars.

i was also fortunate enough to have had a student midwife allocated to me that day. Unfortunately I cannot recall her name, but she was amazing, I was surprised to learn that she was only a first year student! She was already so capable. I also remember how intuitive she was and took a lot of initiative. She made my experience at the deliver ward that more easy and smooth. I now remember my delivery fondly and have forgotten the horrors of my induction all thanks to the very capable team that looked after me after the induction.

Dear Soup

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us. I am incredibly sorry to hear about your induction experience. Your feedback highlights a number of areas for improvement, including shared decision making, informed consent and pain relief.

If you feel comfortable doing so, I would encourage you to contact our Consumer Liaison Team by phone 6458 1444 or email WNHSCLS@health.wa.gov.au. We would like the opportunity to review your care in more detail, and to apologise to you directly.

Induction of Labour (IOL) is currently a key focus area at WNHS, and we have a multidisciplinary IOL working group that meets regularly to review and implement improvement strategies. We value consumer feedback in these sessions, and will share your Care Opinion story with the group to ensure the areas you have outlined receive ongoing attention.

Your labour and birth experience, in contrast, seems like it was much more positive, thanks to the amazing care from Holly, Bri, and the student midwife. It's clear that their advocacy and compassion had a significant impact on your experience. It's fantastic that you had such a supportive team, and it's great to hear that you now remember your birth fondly. We will pass on your thanks to these staff, who will no doubt be grateful to hear how much their care meant to you and your family.

I hope we hear from you soon.

Kind regards,

Delaney
