"MGP program and pregnancy and birth"

About: Broome Health Campus / Maternity/Midwifery

(as the patient),

MGP

The Mgp is a really good program and I’m so glad that it is offered in the public system Continuity is really important

Having someone to Advocate for patients preferences and individual circumstances is really important in pregnancy and birth

Georgie

Georgie made me feel comfortable and confident that I was being looked after.

She has a lot of experience and was thorough. She is very personable and thoughtful and went out of her way to make sure I was getting what I needed. She would spend time to make sure I felt comfortable and would check in (sometimes first thing in the morning)

It felt like an aunty looking after you

It was so good to have a trusting relationship with someone who understands you. There are a lot of staff involved in planning your birth and the delivery so having a professional to advocate for you and help make decisions about my care was important

Georgie helped guide me to make a decision about my induction date with the information I had and then to guide me through the induction process and then the Caesarian process without deciding for me but being supportive and having a lot of time experience

At one stage I raised concerns about a lack of coordination with the obstetrics team and my neurologist. Georgie made sure it was addressed straight away. She was clear and considered.

Georgie helped me seek clarity from my neurologist about something that had been misinterpreted by the obstetrics team

She followed protocol and procedure and explained everything to me

Meet the mid wife Morning tea was a great way to get to meet other mid wives who we may see when ours is not working which could include the birth

It was also a good way to meet other pregnant women especially as I only moved to Broome a year ago and have not met with one of them in mothers group

Hospital stay

Room 34 has loud sound. Not sure if it is air con or related to the water pipes. It is very loud and woke us throughout the night. Others have experienced this also.

Room 35? Air con was really cold and can’t be turned down. Need to wear jumpers and blankets to stay warm

Staff

During the day there were a lot of staff and specialists coming into the room. After a night of not sleeping I barely had any time that there was not someone coming in to keep me awake. This is a particular issue for me as I have epilepsy which is triggered by sleep deprecation but lots of new mums would be up at night.

Maybe a more coordinated approach to specialists and people coming in and out would be good

Mid wives

I think it would have been good for a mid wife to sit with me on the day of the birth or next day to check breastfeeding technique and talk about cluster feeding and colostrum, milk supply etc

Mid wives have different ideas and approaches. Probably some coordinated principles would be good. A very small example; one mid wife suggested I get formula on the 2nd day as they were worried about my nipples, then I went to get it and the other mid wife suggested I keep trying the breast.

Sharron the night mid wife was so lovely and kind to me and looked after my baby for a couple of hours so I could sleep.

all the mid wives were lovely

Surgeon/doctor

I think her name was Elisa, from Queensland. She was very good at communicating with me and I felt confident in her skills and experience

The food was pretty good

The garden is lovely and the rooms looking out on to it are so nice

The hospital in general feels friendly

Obstetricians

They were all really good and seemed experienced and qualified and I felt like there was a high standard of care at the hospital

They do seem to be really busy and in one case we were waiting more than an hour and our consult felt rushed

There was a bit of lack of coordination and clear communication between the obstetricians and my neurologist and myself regarding delivery method and managing sleep and pain.

I raised this and it was addressed by the head of department who was very clear and provided me all of the information that I needed.

Georgie helped me seek clarity from my neurologist about something that had been misinterpreted by the obstetrics team
