I am writing to express my concerns regarding my recent 20-week ultrasound appointment at Broome Hospital, which was conducted the radiographer. This was my first ultrasound, and as a first-time expectant mother attending the appointment alone, I was already feeling vulnerable.
Upon entering the room, I was asked to put my phone face down and turn off my Apple Watch. While I understand this is for safety, accuracy and privacy reasons, I had planned to ask if I could take photos and videos to share with my partner, but it was made clear by the radiographer's demeanour that they would not be supportive of this. I felt this was not addressed with the consideration I had hoped for.
Before the appointment, my midwife and other healthcare professionals had informed me that I would be given the option to learn my baby’s gender should I wish to know. However, when the ultrasound was nearing its conclusion, I was asked if I had any questions. Feeling overwhelmed by the already somewhat negative experience I had had on arrival, I didn’t ask about the gender at that time. After the scan had ended and the equipment was being packed away, I inquired about the gender. I recall the radiographer responded abruptly that it was a question I should have asked earlier, when the opportunity to ask questions was offered. They then declined my request to confirm the gender, stating rather bluntly that it wasn’t part of the standard procedure and questioning why I wanted to confirm it, given the reliability of my NIPT test results.
I felt uncomfortable with their response and the tone of their communication, which I perceived as dismissive and unempathetic. As a result, I left the appointment feeling unsupported and very emotionally distressed, which was particularly difficult given my vulnerable state.
This experience was a stark contrast to my previous ultrasounds by other staff members, which had been supportive and reassuring. I hope you understand that I am sharing this feedback in the interest of ensuring that other patients do not experience similar distress during their appointments.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I appreciate your consideration and hope for a resolution.
