"My experience with endo at emergency"

About: Armadale Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I have endometriosis and one night I woke up in excruciating pain with cold sweats and feeling of sinking heart. I went to the emergency department and they did the ultrasound and told me its the same like your previous ultrasound at another hospital. I asked them I have never had this kind of pain which was worse than the labour pain and the junior doctor had no answer and said I will go and ask my boss (senior gynaecologist). The junior doctor came back and said take these painkillers and if it does not help, talk to your gp. If there is an issue like you faint then you can come to the emergency (I swear they said this). I asked what can I do to stop my vaginal bleeding as I am constantly bleeding for 20 days now I am bleeding heavily and with clots. The junior doctor again said ok I will go ask my boss. Came back and said my boss told me to tell you to ask your gp for the medicine. So I have to faint/die with pain to go to emergency and the senior gynaecologist the boss cannot come and talk to the patient and prescribe a medicine to help the patient other than a pain killer? I left with tears, we are law abiding citizens, pay thousands in taxes every year, never do any cash transactions like other people and we are unable to avail basic medical facility. The attitude of the doctor made me feel helpless, worthless. No empathy for the pain someone is feeling.

Dear Endo fighter

I’m truly sorry to hear about the pain and frustration you've experienced. What you’ve described sounds incredibly difficult, and you absolutely deserve more empathy and to have your concerns taken seriously, especially when you're already dealing with the challenges of endometriosis. It must be difficult to feel like you aren’t getting the help you need, especially when you were seeking relief for severe pain and bleeding.

I truly appreciate you sharing your concerns; however, it's challenging to offer the best support for you with the limited information we have. I would encourage you to contact the Consumer Liaison on 9391 1153 or via email at AKG_ConsumerLiaison@health.wa.gov.au so we can discuss this further and initiate an investigation. These investigations help us improve our services.

I want to assure you that I will feed back your comments to the team in Emergency and the Specialist Gynaecologists so we can improve the experience of consumers like you who come to our Emergency Department.

If your pain or bleeding worsens to a level where you feel it's an emergency, don't hesitate to go back to the emergency department or visit another hospital. It’s essential that you feel heard and that your concerns are taken seriously.

Sincerely

Alisha Thompson
