I had been on a waiting list for four months for major surgery and two weeks ago it happened, I was understandably anxious about the procedure, particularly due to a friend's unfortunate experience, she did not recover from surgery. I asked the nurse if I could have something to relax me before going into theatre. The nurse and anaesthetist provided reassurance, 1:30 pm before I knew it, I was walking into theatre, I thought 'oh wow' this is cool, never walked into theatre before, the prep in theatre never bothers me as I am fascinated with the buzz, immediately forgetting about my worry. The theatre staff were amazing, while chatting too the anaesthetist watching the anaesthetic going into my arm. My surgery involved a uterus, bowel, and bladder prolapse, as well as performing a hysterectomy.
Back to the ward around 6pm, in a lot of pain but managed with good pain medication. The following morning, I had a visit from the lovely doctors, informing me that the surgery went well and that I could go home later in the afternoon, I told the doctors I am not going home today, I want to stay until I feel 100 percent.
My blood pressure was lower than normal, the ward nurse was concerned she kept checking more frequently, this went on for about an hour or so I believe, even changing the blood pressure monitor which she thought might be faulty, she called the clinical nurse who then checked my blood pressure 2 or 3 times with her stethoscope it kept going lower, she called a Code Blue (I knew what that meant having worked in health) - there was probably 10 medical staff in my room, all I can say is I felt in good hands, but nervous, the doctor that spoke to me earlier in the morning knelt next to me and held my hand, reassuring me, I expressed my earlier reluctance to go home, knowing my own body I did not feel right. The doctor sincerely apologised.
I ended up staying 3 nights and on the third day a very handsome, good-looking doctor doing his rounds told me I was good to go, I was happy to be discharged.
