About: Kununurra Hospital / Emergency Department Kununurra Hospital / Maternity Ward

(as the patient),

I recently had my second child delivered at KDH one moth ago. The staff were absolutely wonderful, and though there were mostly fifo / out of town temporary staff I can’t fault the care.

I can however fault some of the facilities. During antenatal appointments I was excited to hear the hospital had a cordless monitor to check baby’s heartbeat etc during labour, as the cords can make labouring very restrictive which I experienced in my first labour, however though they had the machine it didn’t work properly as it kept losing signal due to the dated hospital infrastructure.

The baby hearing test took about 50 minutes which was a very long time to try and keep a baby quiet and asleep due to the age of the machine. Also difficult as the maternity rooms are on the general ward with a lot of noise. I know newer machines can take a very short time and free up staff (who are short staffed).

I had brought a large collection of colostrum with me to be put in the hospital freezer as directed by the midwife during antenatal appointments. Unfortunately the fridge / freezer wasn’t working well and it all defrosted meaning I couldn’t use the majority of it anymore which was extremely frustrating as I waiting for my milk to come in after my hard work pre labour.

I’ve also more recently been in the hospitals emergency department, and during the admission process the power went off and then the generator kicked in. The nurse helping me said it happened everyday at that time. It happened a second time not long afterwards. It meant we had to start the computer admission process all over again as the computer had turned off and lost my data. Not very efficient and meant that myself and people after me had to wait longer to be seen. Not ideal in an emergency situation

I believe the facilities could definitely be improved at Kununurra DH. It’s the regional hub for the east Kimberley so a very important hospital.

Dear requirementwh73,

Congratulations on the birth of your baby – we hope you are both well.

I am sorry to hear of your experience here at Kununurra Hospital and would like to take the opportunity to advise you on the improvements that we have made.

It is not acceptable that you lost a large amount of colostrum (which you had brought in with you) due to a possible fault with the fridge. We have streamlined our process now to ensure if any woman is bringing in their colostrum this will be placed within a designated fridge within Maternity.

The hearing screen can take time to complete depending on the environment and baby. Working to minimise the noise when undertaking the hearing screen, we have now looked to take mum and baby to the Birth Suite so the screen can occur in a quiet environment, and both mum and baby be comfortable whilst this is occurring.

Whilst we have recently replaced our transformer which will minimise any power outages there may still be occasions when the cordless monitor can lose signal. We will take every opportunity to ensure this does not occur but if it should, then the other monitor which needs to be plugged in will be used. This is to ensure we are still able to safely hear baby’s heart during labour.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your feedback as it is important to us to hear what our patients have to say so that we can continue to look at making improvements.

Kind Regards,

Debra Goddard
