I was a inmate at Lotus Glen Correctional Facility. Being an indigenous man from in Cape York Far North Queensland when my parole officer asked me who I wanted to released to, I chose Shanty Creek Therapeutic Centre, knowing it is for the indigenous.
Upon arriving I didn't know what to expect. When meeting the other residents for the first time, I felt comfortable knowing this is a safe place. Wanting a change to my lifestyle as I knew if I went anywhere else, I would've ended up back in jail. I have now been at Shanty Creek Therapeutic Centre for a number of weeks. I have enjoyed my time at Shanty Creek and the other residents help with my recovery. I have now finished the Family Well Being Program run by Fiona, one of the case workers at Shanty Creek. The ATODS (Alcohol, tobaco and other drugs) program run David and the Gambling Program by Wilma. I really enjoy it as this is a real eye opener for me. All the staff are very supportive and helpful in many ways if there was something I needed help with they were there when I needed them. My goal is to finish the Program at Shanty Creek. When I'm finished the program at Shanty Creek I'll let you know my plan for my future journey in life.
"Where I've come from to where I am today."
