About: Shanty Creek Residential Rehabilitation Facility

When I first arrived at Shanty Creek I was ashamed to be in rehab but I knew I getting torn from what the alcohol had done to me. I used alcohol to hide my pain I was feeling, unknowing it was affecting my family, my kids and my health. On arriving at Shanty Creek I was scared and afraid of what was ahead of me.

So after the first week of getting settled in, I met some other residents as well as staff that made me feel welcome into the Shanty Creek community. But when I was alone I still had a craving for alcohol; this made me feel angry and sad. When I got to feeling this way I would go and talk with other residents and staff about my feeling which would help me overcome these feelings. Participating in programs and exercises also helped me physically and mentally.

Since I came to Shanty Creek to now I haven't had a drink or even thought about having a drink and this is my twelfth week. Since being at Shanty Creek I've learnt so much about living a better lifestyle and being a better role model for my kids. During my time at Shanty Creek I completed programs such as Family Well Being, Atods, Gambling help, Relationships and also completed a course in security and now I will be starting a course in Certificate III in Surface Mining Extractions.

Shanty Creek has helped me come a long way. This has pushed me to a better future for myself and my family.

Response from Gerard Moloney, Lives Lived Well

Hello Shaz Creek

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your days in Shanty Creek, your interactions with Live Lived Well staff and the other residents, and how your thoughts and actions are changing as a result of this experience.

It takes courage and perseverance to change our behaviours, so well done to you for all you have done so far and for the various programs you have completed. Trying new ways to deal with your life experience requires determination and commitment and you speak about doing this in several ways including new ways of connecting with your kids and family.

I wish you all the best in the journey of life as you take the next steps that are ahead of you.

Warm regards

Gerard
