"Refused lifts after appointments at BHS"

About: Broome Health Campus

(as the patient),

I had attended an appointment at the radiology department at the Broome Hospital. After my appointment I asked the Aboriginal Liaison Officer for a lift to my group that I attend on that particular day of the week. The Aboriginal Liaison Officer (ALO) asked who brought me to the Clinic and I said the Mental Health mob dropped me to my appointment. The ALO said that they couldn't drop me off and told me that Mental Health mob had to come pick me up. I felt the way she spoke to me was aggressive and very angry. This made me very upset and I tried tell the ALO that I just attended an appointment at the hospital. This person made me feel bad and angry that they had spoken to me like that and refused to give me a lift. I got frustrated at the thought of walking while it was hot and also being pregnant.

I  walked around the corner to Mental Health and asked one of the Aboriginal Mental Health Workers (AMHW) to drop me to my group.

I feel angry, upset and discriminated against. I won't be asking the ALO for lifts anymore

Thank you for taking the time to tell me about your experience at Broome Hospital following your radiology appointment. I’m sorry that you found the Aboriginal Liaison Officer you spoke to so unhelpful. It is important that all our staff are respectful and kind when interacting with patients and the public.

We are looking into this situation however it would be helpful if we had more information. If you are able could you please call me on phone number 9194 2856 to discuss this issue.

I am glad you were able to get a lift to your group with the Mental Health mob.

Once again thank you for taking the time to tell us your story and I hope you will be able to call me.

Regards

Kelly
