"Post op care after cataract surgery"

About: The Alfred

(as the patient),

I was diagnosed with cataracts in late 2016, much worse in the right eye. I had cataract surgery on my right eye at the Alfred Hospital, Prahran, towards the middle of 2017.  I was kept overnight as I live alone and have no one to help me. Next morning I could see clearly as soon as the eye shield was removed. I got a taxi home and followed all post op instructions. I was very happy as I had perfect eyesight for 7 days, my left eye cataract causing no symptoms at all. My post op appointment following my surgery showed 6/12 vision in both eyes. After the eye test a large amount of dilating drops was put in both eyes with no warning and no reason given. I then saw a surgeon and told him I did not need surgery on the left eye for the time being and was discharged from the surgery list. Because of extreme blur, it was difficult getting home and I could not see the outcome of the eye drops until the next day. When I went out that afternoon, I immediately noticed that the distance vision in my left eye had decreased a lot and then when it got dark I was seeing streaks of light from all bright objects, bright signs were too blurry to read, car headlights were dazzling me and I could see streaks of light from them across the footpath. Off the main road, when I looked at the night sky, I saw 4 blurry moons with a halo around and the stars were just blurs. I contacted the Alfred and went back for an appointment where I was given no explanation of the complete overnight change in my eyesight. The only logical explanation is that my eyes were damaged by the eye drops used at my post op. I had several more appointments and was just told it should wear off but my night vision has not changed since then and is still terrible in my left eye and my right eye still has shadow vision and streaks at night, but not nearly as bad as the left eye. The left eye rapidly lost distance vision after my post op appointment and is now very shortsighted. I have seen several private opthalmologists and no one has explained how my night vision could change completely within 24 hours. I believe a cataract cannot possibly cause that change within 24 hours. Dealing with my vision problems was delayed because I had an accident in late 2017 and broke my right arm which handicapped me for 6 months. I am now due for cataract surgery on my left eye at the Melbourne Eye and Ear Hospital in the near future. This whole situation has caused me extreme stress and depression and I have no guarantee that cataract surgery will give me good night vision in my left eye because the night visions problems were not caused by the cataract. I just have to pray the surgery will clear it. I am very disappointed that no opthalmologist I have seen, with one exception, has expressed any interest at all in discovering exactly what has happened to my eyes. My right eye distance vision is OK in daytime, but bad at night and under bright electric lights. I feel I am just being ignored because I am an aging single woman and not worth bothering with.
