"The lack of service and care"

About: Wyndham Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a carer),

My father is currently a palliative care patient residing in Wyndham, Western Australia. He is on a number of essential medications to manage his symptoms and the hospital were made aware of this prior to his return to the region from Perth. I realised early in the morning a couple of days ago that he would not have enough of a certain drug to get him through the day. I made a call to the Wyndham Hospital first thing that morning and asked if they had this medication and if they could help me. I was met with the reply - There is no doctor here. You will have to try tomorrow at 8:30am to see if they are in. I explained the situation clearly and calmly and was told once again they could not help me and would not even look to see if there were any notes on my father's condition. I was told the Wyndham Hospital would have all his details on file as his condition is quite severe. Feeling quite confused and concerned I called the Kununurra Hospital to see if they could be of some assistance. The nurses in the Emergency Department at Kununurra were extremely helpful and advised that the Wyndham nurses would be able to place a phone order in with a Kununurra doctor to have the issue sorted. I called Wyndham Hospital back and asked if they could please do this. Once again I was met with someone very unhelpful and uninterested in the situation. The response again was - there is no doctor here and nurses cannot dispense medication. After about four conversations with a particular nurse at Wyndham Hospital that went absolutely nowhere, we ended up having to drive the 200km round trip to get assistance from a doctor in Kununurra where we managed to get the medication we needed for that day. The staff at Kununurra Hospital was extremely helpful and apologetic that we had had this experience. I find it very concerning that if there is no doctor staffed at the Wyndham Hospital that the nurses are so unwilling to help but also unable to be of any assistance.   A couple of months ago I had a personal issue that I went and sat in emergency for. Once again there was no doctor staffed and the nurses told me to come back every half an hour to see if they were in. I did this for two hours and I was then told that if they were not in by 1030 that no doctor would be coming in for the day.
