"No feeling in my hand"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / 2 West & Hand Clinic

(as the patient),

I was referred to the hand clinic earlier this year to see a particular doctor. After a lack of treatment at a different Hospital the service here was great. My hand was splinted and I saw the hand therapist who organised for me to continue therapy closer to home. Unfortunately I had to follow that up but we sorted that out.

After visiting a few times, I attended an appointment more recently and we waited almost 4 hours. I got in and saw one of the other doctors who I had seen before. No notes had been left from my previous visit and my original doctor wasn’t there. So this doctor looked at my hand and said it will take time to heal, to try and use it and to return back in 6 weeks.

I wasn't keen on travelling back down there and thought no, I need this sorted, it's getting no better. I have no feeling in my fingers and thumb this has been getting worse over time.

I rang the hand clinic several times and could not get through to confirm my appointment and to confirm that my original doctor would be there. I finally spoke to someone but from the therapy side who confirmed my original doctor would definitely be there and confirmed my appointment time. We arrived and I could see my original doctor was there and thought great, I'll get some answers.

We waited and waited. Finally was taken in. I saw a different doctor, who I have seen before and is very nice. And in not so many words that doctor pretty much said there was nothing they could do. They went to get my original doctor but by that time, that person had left. The doctor I was seeing at the appointment tried calling my original doctor with no answer.

It's now 6 months on and I still have no feeling in my fingers and thumb with shooting pain to my elbow. I continue to get told to use it. Unsure how when I can't feel anything.

I'm extremely disappointed.

Dear Newyhand,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us feedback about your recent experience concerning your care. Your experience has been understandably stressful. We are committed to excellent care for our patients and I would like to follow up with you further to review your treatment with the Hand Specialist. Please contact me on SESLHD-SSEHExecutiveServices@health.nsw.gov.au.

Kind regards
