I was transferred down to Geraldton Hospital from Exmouth Hospital via the Royal Flying Doctor Service. It had been intended that I would go to Perth but bad weather prevented this.
The care in Emergency was OK, although you were left wondering for some time what was happening.
Once I was transferred up to a ward the nursing care was excellent but as the wards were full I was accommodated, along with other patients, in the Day Surgery Ward. This ward is not designed for full-time patients, and there were several of us there. 13 beds, men and women mixed together and only one shower/toilet as the other one was inoperable. There was also one spare toilet outside the ward. At one stage we were left with no toilets. The cubicles were only small which meant nurses attending patients would often pull the curtains back between you and the next patient. There was also little privacy when discussing health issues with either the nursing staff or doctors.
The only good thing in this hospital was the care provided by the nursing staff and the kindness of the ward orderlies.
