"Waiting times for ENT clinics are ridiculous"

About: Perth Children's Hospital

(as the patient),

My child is seen by the ENT at Perth Children's Hospital. My child is complex and we see many outpatient clinics.

I feel the ENT Clinic thinks it is acceptable to over-book clinics and the wait time is between 1-2 hours every appointment.

My time is valuable. My child's health is compromised by sitting in a hospital waiting area for an extended time period because of what I feel is this Clinic's lack of organisation. My child has a low-functioning immune system and is exposed to germs by the long wait times.

We live 20 minutes away by car and don’t need to sit at the hospital for 2 hours!

Dear saturnmy64,

I’m sorry that you have experienced lengthy delays in our clinics. The ENT clinics may run late for many reasons, one of the main reasons is when medical staff are called away to address an emergency. We do endeavour to keep waiting times to a minimum where possible, and we acknowledge that our patients’ (and their family’s) time is valuable. You can advise the clinic clerk if you wish to leave the waiting area, and request an SMS call back when the clinic is ready for your child, however it is important to closely monitor your phone for your SMS call back message to avoid further delays. You may then visit Fun on Four or the hospital’s other recreation and food service areas if you have been advised of a lengthy wait. Please also note that the Family Resource Centre is located directly opposite the ENT clinic. The Family Resource Centre is designed to be a relaxing place for families to visit during their child’s outpatient appointment or hospital stay. Information about the facilities available at the Family Resource Centre is available at https://pch.health.wa.gov.au/For-patients-and-visitors/Amenities-Facilities/Family-Resource-Centre.

If you would like to discuss this issue further, please contact the Child and Family Engagement Service on 6456 0032 or via CAHSfeedback@health.wa.gov.au and our Clinical Nurse Manager for PCH Outpatients would be happy to contact you.

Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention.
