"Managing customer car parking"

About: Royal Adelaide Hospital

(as a relative),

Firstly, I would like to thank the team at the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) for the excellent care they have provided to my parent during their stay. They have been professionally and well cared for.

I'd like to provide some feedback about the car parking. It's common knowledge the car parking at the RAH is somewhat nightmarish! I spent 40 minutes driving around in the middle of one day to try and get a car park and subsequently started visiting later in the early evening when car parking is much more readily available. This does mean, however, that we are not present when the doctors visit my parent. I've heard of others who have parked in car parking in the city and caught a tram down after being unable to park. It adds stress to families when a loved one is unwell.

Usually, from about 4pm the car parking improves and I wonder whether part of the issue is staff using customer car parking, despite there being separate staff car parking? I had a staff member comment that they feel staff are using the patient car park due to the convenience it provides.

I would like to request that management of the RAH review the use of the car parking, determine if the staff car parking is being properly utilised by staff and if not what can be done to improve utilisation so that more car parking is available for patients and their families.  Perhaps review and some relatively minor modifications can considerably improve this aspect of the service.

Thank you.

Dear Feedbackprovider,

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent visit and Car Parking at the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH). It’s great to receive feedback on services provided by the Central Adelaide Local Health Network (CALHN).

There are 2,300 car parking spaces, with 600 spaces available for the public at the RAH. A total of 50 accessible spaces are available across all levels for people who hold a Disability Parking Permit. There are more than 150 spaces for motorcycles, and dedicated bicycle hubs providing capacity for 300 bikes. However, we are aware of the significant demand for car parking capacity for patients, visitors and staff across the site.

We are continually reviewing processes in an effort to increase capacity and improve car parking across Central Adelaide Local Health Network and a number of strategies and initiatives are being implemented to increase car parking capacity. These new initiatives have been designed to improve visitor capacity across the site and reduced waiting lists for staff parking permits. Some of the other improvement initiatives include:

Increase in the time from entry into the Car Park to allow patients and visitors up to 30 minutes to find a car parking space. If unable to locate a car park we have authorised exit within that 30 minutes without incurring a fee. New and improved signage onsite for better access and visibility. Reduced daily or monthly rates for RAH based staff at nearby commercial car parking facilities. Staff awareness and education to ensure appropriate use of dedicated staff only parking areas to create capacity in visitor parking areas.

Once again we thank you for your feedback and will utilise it to continue to review services in line with service requirements.

Regards,

Elke Kropf,

Director Operational Services

Central Adelaide Local Health Network
