About: Prince of Wales Hospital

Earlier this year I injured one of my fingers playing AFL. I sought treatment at the Prince of Wales (POW) Public Hospital which began with a referral to the hand specialist. They recommended surgery right away to repair a tendon that had been torn off the bone, which I took to be quite serious! They also advised that there would be at least a 12 week recovery time before I could return to AFL. Luckily, they were able to get me seen to the very next day to complete the surgery. The surgery went well and I was even discharged later that day to begin my recovery. Hand therapy and rehabilitation began within a few days with the physio department at POW. Emma and Louise had care of me and I couldn't have been in better hands! They were both very patient and thoughtful and I could tell they really cared about my recovery.

Hand therapy was every week or so and then I had exercises to complete by myself to progress with recovery. Emma helped make sure that I was well organised for an overseas trip for two weeks that I had planned. This also included advice on how to get my stitches out as they were due whilst I was travelling. Upon returning, it was back into it and therapy was going really well and I was building strength and progressing in line with optimum recovery.

After right on 13 weeks I was told that the injury had recovered well and I could return to competitive sport. I played a game of reserve grade football that week which was after missing the first ten games of the year. I have since played every game with the first grade and we have recently made the grand final! I could not have been able to do this without the help of Emma and Louise who guided me every step of the way. Their level of care and expertise was first-rate and I really enjoyed my time at the hospital.

Dear wezenxx54,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us and share your recent experience. The Prince of Wales Hospital is pleased to hear you’ve had such a positive experience, despite your injury. It was particularly good to hear about the care from our Physiotherapy Hand team. Your kind words have been feedback to Emma, Louise and the Physiotherapy team.

All the best for your rehabilitation and best of luck with the grand final.

Kind regards

Elizabeth Browne
