"A bad experience had by a friend."

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Surgical Ward

(as a friend),

My friend presented to Admin recently in the early morning, for a Day Procedure, to remedy a Cataract in their eye.

They had to wait some time for a response from the Clerk, on the phone.

They were directed to Outpatients, which they found didn't open for another hour and a half.

Returned to Admin, same clerk, negative response, again.

Another clerk nearby sent my friend to Day Ward, where they found themselves delegated to the rear of the field for their procedure.

In pre-op they were given drops to the eye, which turned their eye purple.

When they were called in for their procedure, there was a concern, because they were given the wrong pre-op drops, which was a concern, having them wait while the correct medication was put into their eye.

It is now middle of the afternoon, no food or water, The Operation finished now in Post-Op, needing to pee they went to the toilet, and was seemingly chastised by the nurse, for not having a PCA push them to the toilet.

I picked my friend up later in the afternoon, they were a little miffed by the experience, and doesn't have the facilities to write this Care Opinion story.

Dear Keizh45

Thank you for taking the time to share this story and to advocate on behalf your friend. I can inform you that we have shared this story with staff and are reviewing the information we provide to patients in regard to their appointments. We will also continue to work with our staff to ensure improved understanding, empathy and the importance of good communication and how we should not presume what our patients might know or not know. Once we have reviewed, we will share any improvements made on Care Opinion.

Please pass on my apologies to your friend as it was disappointing to read of their experience, and reassure them that we are working with our staff to improve our service. If your friend would like to discuss their experience further, I would be happy to discuss with them. I can be contacted by calling the Kalgoorlie Health Campus on 9080 5817. I do hope that the procedure was a success though.

Kind Regards

Margaret Smillie
