"Fitting a catheter"

About: Peel Health Campus / Surgical ward

(as the patient),

Puzzled. The staff that did the procedure were friendly and considerate during the procedure, but at the end I was given a number of colostomy bags, with no instructions. The leg bag was fitted too loose, so I had a couple of days of discomfort with the bag around my aches, pulling on the catheter. It was only after Googling that I discovered that the leg bag should be fitted to my thigh, and that the tapes were stretchy. I also found that I had larger bags with no straps for night use.

Dear bluefq79

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback following your recent discharge from Peel Health Campus.

Unfortunately, this is not the usual process that should occur whilst being discharged with a catheter bag. Instructions and education should be given to the patient at discharge.

I apologise for our remiss and can assure you staff education will occur to prevent a recurrence as this is not our normal procedure.

If you would like to have further follow up with a Nurse who can provide the education we failed to provide initially, please feel free to reach out to our Patient Liaison Officer who can arrange for this. You can make contact via email, PHC.Feedback@health.wa.gov.au or by calling 9531 8000.

Kind Regards,

Kellie Blyth

Executive Director
