"Recent hospital stay after accident"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Emergency Department Royal Perth Hospital / Transit Lounge

(as the patient),

After a freak accident at home on a Sunday afternoon, I ended up having to be taken by ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital.

To be completely honest, my first thought was “Oh God not that place”

I had never been to Royal Perth Hospital but stories I’d heard on the news made me weary.

When we arrived I was brought through to triage and almost immediately was seen by a nurse named Brendan.

He was kind, funny and just what I needed in that moment. He was clearly highly skilled at his job and I felt very safe in his care.

I was then taken to a room where a DR came to see me. He again was made me feel at ease by being kind while at the same time as being very professional. (I’m sorry I can’t remember his name)

All the while alarms were going off but the team who was with me never made me feel like they were rushing through my care.

When I was admitted to a ward, every single nurse, doctor, anaesthetist, orderly, cleaner, hospital staff made me feel welcome and cared for.

On several occasions I witnessed staff being spoken to awfully and in every situation the staff remained calm and polite.

Upon my release from the ward, I was taken to the Transit Lounge to await medication and to be collected by my husband.

I was informed immediately that it could be a long wait as the pharmacy was very busy. However this was not a concern as I was given a comfy chair, a blanket and a coffee.

The nurses although very run off their feet continued to provide pain medication when required and were extremely attentive.

It is very clear that this hospital need a huge makeover in my opinion. It is an old building which looks very tired.

What doesn’t need a makeover is the staff. They are knowledgeable, kind, resilient and I am so so grateful to have been under their care for the 4 days I was there.

Dear runner21

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience following your recent visit to Royal Perth Hospital. I was deeply moved by your message and truly appreciate your honesty and thoughtfulness.

I’m very sorry to hear about the accident that brought you to us, but I’m very glad that your experience with our staff helped ease what must have been a stressful and painful time. Your kind words about Brendan in Triage, the attending doctor, and the many nurses, anaesthetists, orderlies, cleaners, and other staff members who cared for you are incredibly heartening. It’s clear that their compassion, professionalism, and resilience made a lasting impression, and I will be sure to pass on your message to the teams involved.

I’m proud of the culture of care and dedication that defines Royal Perth Hospital. Your story is a powerful reminder of the impact our staff have every day. I also appreciate your feedback regarding the hospital’s physical environment. While the building may show its age, we continue to explore opportunities to improve facilities within the existing structure, so they better reflect the high standard of care our staff provide.

Thank you again for your generous message. On behalf of everyone at Royal Perth Hospital, I wish you a smooth recovery and continued good health.

Kind regards
