"Care through the MGP program at FBC"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Family Birth Centre King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I went through the family birth centre for the pregnancy and birth of my first baby. I have anxiety and was very nervous about the experience of pregnancy and birth and chose to go through the family birth centre as I had heard really wonderful things about the continuity of care provided by the midwives.

I was allocated to my midwife Vicky, who is one of the kindest people, and the best medical professional I have ever met. Vicky was consistently supportive and caring throughout the duration of my pregnancy, patiently and compassionately answering any fear or query I had and clearly stepping me through all my options at each point in my pregnancy.

I was also introduced to Yumi, another member of Vicky’s team, who was wonderful and equally kind and patient. Alongside Vicky and Yumi I spoke to a number of midwives when I called due to concerns regarding pains I was experiencing or queries about babies movements. All encounters I had through the FBC were met with patience and kindness , and helped me to feel truly comfortable before I left a call or meeting, this was as really beneficial as I knew there was a possibility Vicky would not be at the birth yet felt very comfortable that I would be really supported due to these encounters.

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes which involved additional scanning and trips to the main hospital during which I met more of the midwives, sonographers and obstetricians who work at Kind Edwards, all of whom were kind, patient and supportive (although non-compared to Vicky). I also appreciated that Vicky took the time to chat through all the appointments I had at the main hospital clearing up any queries I had or answering any questions I forgot to ask.

I went into spontaneous labour and laboured at home. Vicky was off during my labour and birth but I checked in with the midwife on call who helped me to understand what was happening and what I could expect as it was my first birth - this support allowed me to confidently labour at home until I needed to go to the birth centre.

I birthed at the FBC supported by midwives Emma and Yumi, both of whom were fabulous and helped me safely birth my baby girl, through gentle guidance and support. I had a truly wonderful first birth and I owe so much of that to Vicky, Yumi, Emma and the MGP at the FBC.

I was extremely nervous throughout my pregnancy, through the continuity of care and support of my midwife I approached my birth feeling comfortable, supported and aware of decisions I may have to face during my birth and what my choices were. This allowed me to go into my birth with confidence in the knowledge I was truly supported and would be advocated for throughout.

The Midwife group practice program was integral in my capacity to feel comfortable throughout the duration of my pregnancy and going into birth. I feel really lucky to have had my first baby through the FBC and when I have another baby I will absolutely hope to go through the FBC again.

Dear warmrw77,

Congratulations on the birth of your baby girl and thank you for sharing your beautiful story with us!

I was so pleased to read about your positive experience with our Midwifery Group Practice (MGP), especially the kind and supportive care you received throughout your pregnancy when you had additional care requirements after your gestational diabetes diagnosis. I am sure that Vicky, Yumi, Emma and the rest of the team will be thrilled to know how well supported and cared for they made you feel. Your story highlights the powerful impact of continuity of care can have and how important it is to help women feel at ease.

I will be delighted to share your kind words of appreciation with Vicky and the rest of the team.

Wishing you all the best,

Delaney
