I was accepted into the Family Birth Centre at KEMH and cared for by an amazing group of midwives throughout my pregnancy. Each appointment was informative and supportive, leaving me confident in myself, my body, and my baby. I could call or text with any concerns and always felt truly cared for, like I was their only patient.
When my waters broke, I called my midwife who guided me through each stage. By the time I reached the Centre, my contractions were intense, but the dimly lit, calming room helped me focus. During my six-hour labour at the centre, I felt encouraged and supported to have a natural birth. My midwife reminded me, “your body will only show you what it can handle”—words that gave me strength with every wave of pain.
Both my baby and I were closely monitored. I was given antibiotics after 18 hours of my waters breaking and fluids to keep me strong. After my son was born, we enjoyed hours of skin-to-skin before I was assessed, stitched, and prepared for discharge. Since my baby tested positive to DAT, we were transferred to KEMH for monitoring, but a few days later we returned home.
The home visits from my midwives afterwards were invaluable, helping me adjust and answering all my questions. Even after discharge, I could still call for advice, which gave me so much confidence. This was the experience I had hoped for, and I feel incredibly grateful for the care, knowledge, and warmth of my midwives.
