"CMP, Family Birth Centre and transfer to ward"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Community Midwifery Program King Edward Memorial Hospital / Family Birth Centre Positive Birth Program

(as the patient),

We were fortunate to birth our second daughter at the family birth centre via community midwifery program. Our first daughter was stillborn at 22+1 weeks at KEMH so this was a very healing birth experience.

Mary Anne (CMP) was my primary midwife throughout my pregnancy and her care, knowledge and explaining everything to ensure informed consent was truly appreciated. The KEMH birth education was an asset to access online as well as the WACHS Positive Birth Education and Early Parenting which helped me and my partner prepare and know tools we could use in the birth. As country clients relocating to Perth Mary Anne and Kirsten were flexible in how we were seen, offered home visits pre and postnatally. The postnatal visits from Mary Anne were so important in supporting us in navigating everything and establishing breastfeeding before we returned back to the farm.

In the birth Mary Anne guided me through an empowering birth. Unfortunately we had a retained placenta and required transfer to theatre and the ward. The kindness and care from the FBC midwives who worked on that day (including but not limited to - Julie, Bonnie, Shani). Was so appreciated while we waited for theatre and tried other ways to birth the placenta.

The doctors, theatre staff, orderlies and ward midwife’s were all so kind as we were transferred to theatre and onto the ward for a few days. In early postpartum I needed to call the breastfeeding helpline and the medication safety and both staff were so helpful and supportive in the newborn haze!

As usual a wonderful experience at KEMH and the staff should all be commended on their care as we welcomed our second daughter into the world. ❤️

Congrats Z123 on the birth of your second daughter.

Just a little response from the WACHS Parent Education Team, I am sure the CMP team will be in touch. Thank you for sharing your story. We’re honoured that the WACHS Positive Birth Program and 4th Trimester, Breastfeeding and Early Parenting programs could support you and your partner as you prepared for this healing birth. It’s wonderful to hear that the tools, knowledge, and compassionate care you received helped you feel informed and empowered as you welcomed your second daughter. It is lovely to hear of all the support you received on your relocation to metro.

Best wishes for the future.

Dear Z123

Congratulations on the birth of your second daughter. You have provided such beautiful feedback about how healing you found this experience after the heartbreaking loss of your first daughter.

I was so pleased to read about your positive experience with the Community Midwifery Program (CMP), especially the exceptional care you received from Mary Anne, your primary midwife. It is also wonderful to hear that your positive experience did not stop there, and that you also received the same level of exceptional care when needing to be transferred to theatre post birth. It is clear that you felt supported, and well cared for throughout.

As country clients, the benefits you found from being able to access the parent education online are so affirming to hear, and I’m delighted that the breastfeeding helpline was also of some assistance to you during that early postpartum haze.

Thank you for taking the time to share your appreciation for not only CMP and the Family Birth Centre but for King Edward Memorial Hospital as a whole.

We will be sure to pass on your thanks to Mary Anne, Kirsten, Julie, Bonnie, Shani and the rest of the team. I’m sure they’ll be delighted to know how much their care meant to you.

Wishing you all the best,

Delaney
