I had the experience of birthing my second born at the Family Birthing Centre at King Edward Memorial Hospital. I had my first born at the same service 2 years earlier and they paired us with the same Midwife, Olivia, which we were so happy about as we had an incredible experience with her. Throughout my pregnancy and birthing journey Olivia was personable, attentive, and provided excellent clinical care. I felt informed, heard and empowered throughout the whole experience. The family birthing centre staff were always welcoming when we attended for appointments and the home style environment provided me with a safe space to birth without medical intervention, whilst being connected to the hospital if the baby or I needed intervention or admission. The follow-up appointments from Olivia and FBC Team 1 at home were supportive and helped us navigate when we needed further medical support for our Bub. We were lucky to have family support to care for our eldest for a few days when we returned from hospital so I could rest, recover, and adjust to having a newborn. I can imagine the short time frame for discharge post delivery would have been more difficult if we didn’t have this family support.
We are so happy for the clinical care, support and service we received and will be forever grateful.
