"Hospital building"

About: Bridgetown Hospital

(as the patient),

The staff at BDH are wonderful! My call before my the procedure, everything on the day and the check up were all great. I went in to have my wisdom teeth out and cannot fault the staff and their work.

However, the hospital itself is old, outdated and honestly depressing in my opinion. Having grown up in the town, it’s disappointing. I understand the building is old, but I feel for the staff who spend endless hours there. It’s dark and outdated. I feel it doesn’t feel welcoming or warm. I believe not only would it be hard for patients on the wards who are they for longer periods of time, but I imagine to work there everyday would be mentally draining.

I believe the staff deserve some upgrades and enjoy where they work! Their mental wellbeing is just as important as the care patients receive. The fact that they are so great despite the environment is a huge credit to them as people. A fresh coat of paint, some bright art work and bright lighting wouldn’t benefit both patients and staff.

Dear Surgeryregular,

Thankyou for your feedback on the Bridgetown hospital facility. Your feedback is important.

Whilst the Bridgetown Hospital is an older hospital, circa 1970's, please be assured regular repairs and maintenance are undertaken. The hospital has a dedicated maintenance team and the WACHS Regional Manager for infrastructure regular visits the hospital and supports prioritisation of works to improve the facility.

Work in recent years includes an upgrade to the ED waiting room, bathroom upgrades, upgrades to air-conditioning, a full kitchen refurbishment, security upgrades including new CCTV and paging system to support staff safety, cabinetry upgrades to clinical and administrative areas, installation of new work stations for staff, installation of a dedicated sonography room and service, replacement of flooring throughout the hospital, painting of hospital inside and outside (facia), improved lighting for infusion lounge area (currently being installed), an upgrade to the mortuary and viewing room, and upgrades to services that support the hospital. These include a new boiler, a new emergency generator and roof repairs.

Upgrades to accommodation have included a dedicated room for on-call staff to sleep over at the hospital, and refurbishment of the hospital owned accommodation for short term staff. As the hospital gets busier, we continue to engage with our clinical staff and Bridgetown District Health Advisory Council (consumer group), to identify opportunities to improve the care experience for patients and the staff providing care.

Thankyou for flagging the suggestion of artwork, which we will take on board in discussion with the Bridgetown District Health Advisory Council, hospital auxiliary and WACHS District Aboriginal Health consultant, to ensure the hospital is a welcoming and a positive therapeutic environment for visitors' patients and staff.

I also welcome your direct contact with local director of Nursing-Health Service Manager Justine Kelly, who can be contacted on M: 0427 901 242 and who is happy to be contacted for suggestions for improvement.

Thankyou sincerely for your feedback and for advocating for the wonderful WACHS staff at Bridgetown Hospital, who go above and beyond who provide great care for their patients and the community day in, day out.
