"Insufficient Handicap parking and unauthorised parking in Handicap zone"

About: Broome Health Campus

(as the patient),

I am an older person, unsteady on my feet and with a Handicap parking sticker.

Recently I had a 9 am appointment at the hospital and arrived there with plenty of time. There are 2 handicap parking spots in front of the hospital and both of them were occupied. 1 vehicle had a handicap sticker the other did not. There was meant to be two more spots in the Staff parking so I drove there but a swipe card was required for accessing it. So I then drove to Broome Primary school and parked in one of their bays . I made my appointment on time however crossing the busy street in front of the school on unsteady legs was very difficult.

I complained at the front desk and they told me about 2 spots off a lane way.

Later that morning when I was at the shopping centre I was phoned by the hospital to come and repeat a test. This time I went to the laneways that I had been told about with additional handicap parking only to arrive and find yet again both spots occupied 1 by a car with a valid handicap sticker and one by a car that shouldn’t have been there.

This is the slow time of year in Broome when there are no tourists. I will dread going to the Hospital once tourist season is on.

Dear cassiopeiact94,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, and I’m very sorry for the difficulties you faced when attending your appointments. We understand how important safe and accessible parking is, especially for community members who rely on ACROD bays.

It is concerning to hear that on two separate visits, designated accessible bays were occupied by vehicles not displaying a valid permit. We acknowledge how frustrating and unsafe this situation must have been for you—particularly having to park further away and navigate a busy road while feeling unsteady on your feet.

Your feedback is important, and we will be reviewing the availability and monitoring of accessible parking, including in the laneway and front‑of‑hospital areas. We will also look into clearer signage and stronger enforcement to ensure bays remain available for those who genuinely need them.

We appreciate you bringing this to our attention, especially ahead of the busier tourist season. Improving accessibility and safety for our patients is a priority, and your experience helps us identify where action is needed.

If you have any further concerns or would like someone to contact you directly to discuss this matter, please let us know—we’re here to help.

Kind regards,

Millie Stewart
