"The care I received after breaking my neck"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

(as the patient),

After taking a bit of a tumble I unfortunately broke my neck. I had to go to hospital to get it all sorted out.

The nurses of G53 ward in Charles Gardiner were phenomenal. It’s hard to put into words how well cared for I felt by them. They kept me in the loop with everything that was going on, the good and the bad. They would laugh at my terrible jokes and kept me smiling even though my future was really still up in the air. When all you can look at is the ceiling they would come in with a smile and just make your day. They found me a charger so I could keep in contact with my friends and family while going through this experience.

I could also overhear their interactions with other patients and you could tell they really cared about their patients. It showed through in everything they said and did when interacting with us.

All in all they are a fantastic bunch of human beings and if I was to do this all over again I’d certainly choose to hang out on their ward again.

Dear Brokeneck,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us.

I am very sorry to hear about your injury and the difficult circumstances that brought you to hospital, but I am delighted to read such positive feedback about the care you received on ward G53 at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

Your kind words about the nursing team — particularly their communication, professionalism, compassion, and sense of humour are truly appreciated. Knowing that they helped you feel informed, supported, and cared for during such an uncertain time is incredibly meaningful.

Small gestures, such as helping you stay connected with family and friends, reflect the person‑centred care we strive to provide for every patient.

I will be sure to share your feedback with the G53 team, as recognition like this means a great deal to our staff and reinforces the impact their care has on patients’ wellbeing.

Thank you again for sharing your story. I wish you all the very best for the future and your ongoing recovery.

Kind regards,

Dr Jodi Graham

Executive Director SCGOPHCG
