"Waiting for day procedure"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / Day Procedure Unit (DPU - 1 West)

(as the patient),

I’ve come all the way down from Coffs Harbour, travelled by bus, left 4pm yesterday afternoon. Got in at 1am to Sydney – been here since 10:30am and still waiting here. I’ve got to have a pterygium removed from my right eye. They told me I have to be here at 10:30am and I am still waiting. I am the last one for today. I’ve got to get a bus heading back home tomorrow. $150 later in travel. I’ve had to fast all day in 6am this morning, still fasting now. I haven’t been able to eat because of it. I’m still waiting for the surgery. I’m supposed to be staying in overnight as well. Sounds to me like it’s going to be pushed back to later. I don’t even have a way of getting back home if they push to keep me even longer. I’ve got no way of getting back home if I don’t get on this bus tomorrow. I have to leave the hospital by 4:30.

I’ve been waiting or 12 months to have this done, to do this procedure. When I got the first appointment to come down 12 months ago, I was only here for a 5 minute, when it seems they could have told me the stuff over the phone. They told me 12 months ago that I would be seeing several specialists.

In that appointment, I recall the doctor, said “it’s only day surgery you’ll be out that day” and then a nurse came in and said “no they won’t it’s over night”. Just ridiculous. It wasn’t only me, there was another patient I saw from the Gold Coast, they came all the way down for a 5 minute trip.

Dear pictorpn97,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are very sorry to hear about the long wait, the difficulties with travel from Coffs Harbour, and the stress caused by fasting and uncertainty around your surgery today.

We also appreciate you raising the concerns about communication around your appointment and the differing information you received about whether your procedure would be day surgery or require an overnight stay. We recognise how important clear and consistent information is, especially for patients who must travel significant distances.

Surgical lists can sometimes run later than planned due to the complexity or urgency of earlier cases, but we acknowledge that this does not lessen the impact on you, particularly given your travel arrangements and fasting requirements. Your feedback about waiting times, communication, and the challenges faced by regional patients is important and will be shared with the relevant teams for review.

If you are still at the hospital and are concerned about your timing, we encourage you to speak with the nursing staff or the admissions team so they can provide you with the most up-to-date information about your procedure and discuss your travel constraints. If you would like your concerns formally reviewed, please contact us on SESLHD-SSEHConsumerFeedback@health.nsw.gov.au so they can look into the matter further and follow up with you directly.

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention, and we sincerely apologise for the distress and inconvenience caused.

Regards,

Dr Pauline Rumma
Director of Clinical Services

Natalie Maier
Director of Nursing and Support Services
