"No scope or tests"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Stomach, Bowel and Liver Care (Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

(as the patient),

Recently I presented at Royal Perth Emergency with what I thought was ongoing gallbladder issues. I had been in a different hospital for the few days before with same issue. On release I was home for a day before I started violently vomiting again.

I presented at Royal Perth Emergency at 8am and after a CT scan was admitted to a surgical team. The team has been amazing pushing for scopes and tests but with no results.

Around 2 days later the gastroenterology team (like 6 doctors) and told me they would be doing a gastronomy the following day. At which time the lead doctor dropped the ‘C’ word.  It is now 3 days later and I still have had no scope or tests. So for 4 days I have NBM been hooked up to a NG Tube and IV medication but with my 8 canula just tissueing. To think about what could possibly be going on inside my body. I am telling you that 4 thinking I might or could have cancer without having any testing done is messing with my mental health.

I have seen multi doctors from different areas who have all expressed concerns by still no action. The Nurse on Ward C4 are truly amazing but it is still not getting me the answers I need.

So I still sit here Nil by mouth for almost 2 weeks. Hoping that this finds the right people and some action is taken.

Dear marchcz76,

I am very sorry to hear about the distressing experience you have described, particularly the uncertainty, prolonged nil-by-mouth status, and the impact your hospital admission has had on your mental wellbeing. I acknowledge how frightening and overwhelming it can be to hear concerns raised about serious conditions without clear information or timely investigations, and I appreciate you sharing how this has affected you.

Your feedback will be forwarded to the Gastroenterology team in the hope that they may be able to identify you and review your care and progress. While this feedback was submitted anonymously, I am keen to ensure that any concerns raised can be addressed as promptly as possible. I therefore strongly encourage you to contact the Patient Experience team, as they can actively assist with raising your concerns, facilitating communication with the treating teams, and advocating on your behalf while you are in hospital. You can contact them directly on (08) 9224 1637 or RPBG.feedback@health.wa.gov.au.

Given the understandable toll this situation has taken on your mental health, I would also like to remind you that the hospital’s Centre for Wellbeing is available to provide emotional support during this time. They are there to support patients, and your nurse can arrange for someone from the Centre for Wellbeing to speak with you if you wish.

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention.

Your feedback is important to us and helps support improvements in patient care and communication.

Kind Regards,

Ben Noteboom
