"Autism diagnosis"

About: Kwinana 1& 2 Child Health Clinic, Rockingham/Kwinana Child Development Service

(as a parent/guardian),

When my child was 2, I felt the child health nurse dismissed my concerns that my child was showing signs of autism, despite a very strong family history.

By the time my child was 4 in 2022 it was unmistakable and we went to our GP who put us on the waitlist for a developmental paediatrician. When we received the letter we were told a 12-18 month wait for CDS.

3.5 years later we finally saw a developmental paediatrician who agreed that our child met the diagnostic criteria for Autism and referred us to the neurodevelopment team at the department of communities. 2 months after that appointment we received a letter telling us the assessment appointment is at least another 2 year wait.

How is it acceptable to wait nearly 6 years for an autism diagnosis? How is my child supposed to reach their full potential when they seemingly have missed every early intervention possibility due to impossibly long waitlists? They are struggling, in school and in life in general, and there seems to be nothing we can do.

Dear errandsw39

Thank you for contacting us and for sharing your experience. We understand this has been a long and challenging process for you and your child. We appreciate the distress and impact that extended waits for assessment and support can have on families whilst Child Development Services unfortunately continues to experience significant demand.

We do recognise the important concerns you have raised about the timeframes involved in accessing developmental and diagnostic services. We would like the opportunity to review your child’s pathway in more detail with you so we can better understand what has occurred, including to assist should any new clinical information be available regarding your son’s presentation.

If you feel comfortable to do so, we invite you to contact our Child and Family Liaison Service team who can discuss your concerns directly with you and assist with the next steps. They can be reached by phone on 6456 0032 or by email at CAHSFeedback@health.wa.gov.au.

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. We hope to hear from you soon.

Warm regards

Judith
