I was booked in for a day procedure at this hospital and was given a specific arrival time. I understand that delays can occur, particularly when emergencies arise, and I was prepared to wait. However, I waited approximately three + hours after my arrival time before going into theatre.
My main concern was not the delay itself, but the lack of communication I noticed during that time. After I was taken through and asked to change, no one came to check on me or provide an update about the delay or when I was likely to go into theatre. Even a brief update or explanation would have made the experience much easier.
I also found an interaction shortly before entering theatre uncomfortable. I am aware that my BMI is on the higher side, and while I understand that my weight may be clinically relevant to my care, while I was waiting in the small, cold area before entering theatre, a theatre technician walked past me and asked how much I weighed, without any further explanation or discussion. Given the circumstances, I found the way this was handled insensitive and would have appreciated more professional and respectful communication.
My biggest concern, however, was my pain management in recovery. When I woke up, I reported that I was experiencing pain and was given pain relief. When the nurse asked me again, I still had pain and rated it as 6/10. I repeated myself to make sure I had been heard. Approximately two minutes later, I heard the nurse tell another nurse that I was fine to return to the DPU and that my pain was 2/10, which was not what I had reported.
As a result, when I arrived back in the DPU, the staff there had to provide me with additional pain relief because I was still experiencing significant pain.
I appreciate that hospital staff are working in a busy environment and that delays and unexpected situations can occur. However, I believe patients should still be kept informed about significant delays, treated respectfully and sensitively, and have their concerns accurately communicated, particularly when it comes to pain and readiness for transfer.
I am providing this feedback because I hope these issues can be reviewed and that steps can be taken to improve communication, patient dignity and pain management for future patients.
