"The treatment I received in Box Hill Hospital for my heart attack"

About: Box Hill Hospital / Cardiology Box Hill Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I came into the hospital with what Dr Victoria described as “a major heart attack”. This was after I, my GP and my wife had all considered my epigastric pain to be gastric – whereas it was actually cardiac. The pain became severe and I was welcomed to Box Hill Hospital that evening by the triage staff. They called the Cardiology Registrar Dr Victoria and Cardiologist Dr Bon and whipped me into the Emergency Department. They stabilised me but the pain didn’t diminish. I had a coronary angiogram and in the operating theatre Dr Yew put a stent in the blocked artery. At last I felt the pain dissipate. I was transferred to Ward 2: 2 where I received excellent skilled and courteous nursing care and visits from Dr Bon and Dr Robin.

Later I was wheeled to ultrasound where Simon checked my heart and wrote a report that indicated that there seemed to be little permanent injury to the heart muscle that had suffered the ischaemia. I also received an X-ray.

I enjoyed the good food that the hospital provided and the cheerfulness of the staff both medical and ancillary. The air mattress on my bed was a new experience for me and I found it pleasant once I realised it was not actually alive. I didn’t mind moving to a shared ward in the middle of the night to make my single room available for someone who needed it more.

Dear Baba Luka

Thank you for sharing your story on Patient Opinion. It appears that from the time you arrived at Box Hill Hospital that our teams swung into action and that our systems worked "in sync" to make you well again. That's a great outcome for you on a personal level and for our community on a broader level to also know that our health system can work very well. Thank you so much for taking the time to tell and share your story. As you know, our health system sometimes gets "knocked" in the media and so it's great to be able to balance this with your experience. I was also really pleased to hear that you enjoyed the food as we have spent a lot of time improving this and our dieticians, food services staff and kitchen staff have been working very hard to address this - your story give us confidence that those changes are making a difference.

And your final points on the air mattress (improving so much with technology now) and the change in room are also very welcome and so pleased that you understand that this does happen from time to time and may also happen for you.

I will be sure to pass on your feedback Baba Luka and our staff will get a real boost from your very kind comments too.

Take care, keep well and thanks again for getting in touch, Alan Lilly
