"Child Health Nurse/Service"

About: Geraldton Community Health Service Northampton Health Centre

(as a parent/guardian),

I have 2 children who need their  vaccinations and their child health check ups. I have tried to make an appointment with the child health  nurse to be told she is fully booked and I cannot make an appointment for another 2 weeks, I then rang the Geraldton Clinic to be told I would  be called back about getting an appointment and I never received a call back.   I can not make appointments this far in advance as I have 2 small children and I also have a family business that needs to be run.   In the last year we have had a visiting Child Health nurse and I believe it is not working in our small community. Previous to this service we had 1 full day of an open clinic a week when we could go into the child health nurse, get what we needed done and sometimes meet other new parents in our small town. This worked great and I believe this should happen more often for child health appointments as you never know if you will have a bad night or day with young children.

Immunisation is one of the most successful, safe and cost-effective health interventions and vaccines have the power not only to save lives but to ensure that our children grow up healthy. WA Country Health Service understands the importance of immunisation appointments and child health checks as they also allow us an opportunity to provide support to both the child and parent.

Once again, I am sorry that you have had this experience with our service and I would like you to know that this feedback is very helpful in terms of highlighting where we need to improve.

Dear annoyedmum

Just a quick update – Hari has advised he has spoken to you regarding your concerns and he informed me that we did attempt to contact you however our staff member called the incorrect number so again I'm extremely sorry that this occurred.

The Northampton child health clinic is run by appointment which allows busy mums an opportunity to plan their day by having a scheduled appointment rather than having to wait 2 – 3 hours for an unscheduled appointment. Hari has confirmed that you have an appointment scheduled now for both of your children.

Just to let you know there is a Northampton Playgroup which may be a great way to meet other parents and children. The group meets each Monday of the school term from 9.00-11.00am at the Edna Bandy Centre on Stephen Street. New families are encouraged to come along.
