About: Harvey Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

Recently I took my child to the emergency department at Harvey. My child had cut their knee in our fresh water dam on a fresh water mussel. The cut is approximately 2.5cm long and quite deep and the attending doctor and nurse cleaned the wound and administered a local anaesthetic and inserted two stitches.

Following this my child contracted a fever and an infection and I took my child to the local doctor surgery in Harvey (Harvey Medical Group). The doctor prescribed antibiotics (penicillin). On the completion of this course I took my child back to the Harvey Medical Group as the wound was not clearing up. The doctor gave my child another script for penicillin.

The following evening whilst changing the dressing we noticed several pieces of the mussel (which her knee landed on in the dam) inside the wound. We took them out. We noticed more inside the wound so I took my child back to the doctors at Harvey Medical Group in Waroona. The doctor gave my child a local anaesthetic and cut open the wound and cleaned it out. My child now has no stitches and a gaping wound. My child have now missed several days of school and is unable to attend their dance training where my child will be competing in a month for their dance exams and competitions.

I feel this could have been prevented had the attending doctor and nurse at the Emergency Department at Harvey cleaned the wound out properly.

I would like a reply please.
