Walking into Sydney Eye Hospital, incites the feeling that you have just walked into a Harry Potter novel. The building is stunning. The architecture is top notch. However, this is not a story about design or even healthcare-related. Not directly anyways.
Public institutions are generally held to a higher responsibility for protecting the environment and adhering to at the very least, basic guidelines and regulations around recycling. Not once, have I been able to find a paper recycling bin or a plastic recycling bin in all of that hospital, and I cringe to watch staff blatantly throw recyclable materials into the garbage.
I have been to public health facilities around the world and no where have I found the safe and responsible disposal of recyclable material worse than in Australia.
"A health organisation without environmental responsibilities?"
