Being listened to

After some bleeding and passing my (assumed) baby at 10 weeks pregnant I went to the E.D. The triage nurse was very patient, listening to me through the tears. Embarrassingly I realized I had leaked onto the chair, the staff were discreet in helping me get a gown and get cleaned up.

I was taken straight through to the back where my nurse saw me, as soon as I finished telling her my story my doctor was there. I was quickly seen and blood tests were taken. The nurse on duty and the doctor were both so compassionate towards me, offering the most privacy possible during a vaginal exam, by spinning the bed 360 degrees. They explained what would be happening every step of the way.

I was admitted to Colyer overnight for a scan and possible surgery the next day. The staff on the ward were amazing. The ultrasound technician was also very soothing. The specialist explained what was happening and offered me a choice in how to proceed.

The surgeon came in to tell me about the procedure and answer any questions. He spoke so gently and used very easy to follow language, I felt like a child but in a good way. Like I was fragile (which I was). In theatre the doctor and nurses were amazing holding my hand and helping me feel safe.

The after op recovery was comfortable. I was able to go home when I was ready without feeling rushed. Even though that was the worst time in my life, it was also the most amazing care I have received in a hospital by all staff involved. Also thanks to those who shuffled me between wards and fed me after a long fast in prep for my surgery,

Dear Thankfulleigh,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us.

I am very sorry and saddened to hear of your recent loss and offer my sincere condolences to you.

At the same time, I am very glad to learn that our staff were on-hand to provide you with the best possible care during what must have been an extremely traumatic and distressing experience for you.

To hear that you were treated with compassion, respect and kindness from the moment you arrived at our Emergency Department through to the operating theatres and on the ward, make me extremely happy and proud of our team.

I will certainly pass on your kind words to the various teams involved in your care.

Thanks again for getting in touch and for your lovely compliments.

Best wishes
