"Cardio Rehab at Wantirna"

About: Box Hill Hospital / Cardiology Cardiac Rehabilitation Program (Angliss) Monash Medical Centre / Cardiology

(as the patient),

I was very fortunate to be offered a place in the Cardio Rehab program at the Wantirna site, following a mitral valve repair procedure.

Have found the team (Georgie, Mathew, Kellie, Rita and Viv) to be exceptional in their enthusiasm for those present to improve their levels of fitness and understanding of the possible causes of our issues and their positive and supportive ways of working with a quite diverse group. The group I have been with has around 15 members (including individuals coming in or 'graduating' each week) and the team works very effectively to create a cohesive and supportive environment for all.

I was very disappointed to hear that funding issues may see the program restricted across the three Eastern Health venues. When my surgery was completed and the hospital medical team were explaining the next steps, it was mentioned that I may or may not be able to get the rehab, as there was greater demand than places. (This was based on the experiences of the team in following up patients). I was fortunate to be made an offer for involvement

To further restrict a possible involvement with convenient access (and some of my group rely on being reasonably close to the venue to ensure they can participate) doesn't make sense to me. It is clear that the rehab sessions have positive effects on participants (on several levels - physical, emotional, social and level of understanding) and the program I am part of is very well subscribed, so any plan to restrict the program seems to me to be a tremendous shame and a great loss.

I do hope that some way is found to allow the program to continue as it is now - my experience has been overwhelmingly positive and I would attest to the impact it has had on me re my fitness and understanding of what has happened to me and how I can overcome this 'bump in the road'.

I would particularly like to emphasise how much the experience has been enhanced by the members of the rehab team. They have done far more than simply run sessions. They get to know each individual and track their progress - supporting and pushing as needed. A huge 'thank-you' to all of them, for all they have offered the participants.

Dear Happy cardio rehab participant

Thank you for your wonderful reflections and feedback regarding your experience with the cardiac rehabilitation program at Wantirna Health. The whole team (Georgie, Matthew, Kellie, Rita and Viv) collectively and individually do an amzing job - in fact Georgie was awarded the inaugural award for living the Eastern Health value of 'Patients First'.

I would like to assure you that there are no plans to fundamentally change the service model currently in operation. The program is highly valued and we're keen to see it continue to realise great outcomes (just as you've experienced)! We are always looking at better ways to improve our services and this great team will be doing this as well.

Many thanks again and I'm so pleased you have both increased fitness and knowledge, as we all want to be fit and healthy for as long as we can!

Kind regards

David
