"Misdiagnosis"

About: Wonthaggi Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I attended A and E one morning recently. I woke up at 10 pm the evening before with an extremely painful little finger of my left hand. On waking again at approx. 7:30 am, I woke with the end of my little finger badly bruised and a black eye. Your doctor said I'd been bitten by an insect or spider, and on my insistence taped my little finger and ring finger together. That evening, I attended Geelong Hospital.

Geelong Hospital x-rayed my finger, found two breaks, and I had surgery to insert pins and plaster my finger. It is thought that the injuries occurred when I hit the side table in my sleep, as I'm a very restless sleeper. I would like to be involved in the follow up to this complaint.

Dear julyzd49,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with this feedback. I understand that our Health Service Coordinators spoke with you on Thursday and Friday and our Operations Manager of the Emergency Department will be making contact with you on Monday. James will absolutely involve you in all of the complaint follow up and help us understand any learnings from your experience and implement any changes. I would like to take this opportunity to say how very sorry I am that we didn't get this right. We will make sure the doctors involved in your care review their decision making processes, and I sincerely hope your fingers are improving.

Kind Regards, Jan.
