"My parent at Sutherland Hospital"

About: Sutherland Hospital / Geriatric Flying Squad

(as a relative),

My parent is currently in Sutherland Hospital. The rooms are very hot. My parent is running a temperature as well, so it is very unpleasant. I downloaded a thermometer to my smart phone and the temperature reached 25 degrees. I was sweating in the room, as my child. We talked to several staff members and there was nothing they could do. They are saying it's cold in some rooms and hot in others. I questioned another visitor to another room and her elderly parent was so hot they had nothing but a sheet on. This ward is full of elderly people. I am very surprised that this is going on in this day and age especially at Sutherland Hospital. I believe something needs to be done ASAP.

My other parent brought a fan in for my hospitalised parent, but they are not allowed to plug it in. My parent has a temperature, so I believe the heat in the room would only be making it worse.

Dear Dollmum

We are very sorry about the temperature in the rooms at the moment, this has been caused by a breakdown in the air-conditioning system.

An urgent call to maintenance was made by the Nurse Unit Manager to fix the problem and we have had our contractors on site, but unfortunately they were unable to fix the the issue straight away. We have ordered a new air-conditioning motor and we expect it to be installed tomorrow.

Again, I sincerely apologies for any discomfort caused to your parent and to all our patients and staff who are affected by this situation.

Kind regards

Valerie Jovanovic
