"Maternity Services"

About: Broome Health Campus / Maternity/Midwifery

(as the patient),

We had our little one recently in Broome Hospital and I have nothing but good things to say about the incredible care we received.  We were part of the Midwifery Group Practice and had great support throughout the pregnancy including through some minor complications during my pregnancy, with my midwife going above and beyond in her support of me in hospital and at home.

All our birth options and birth plans where discussed in detailed and I felt well informed and given a choice at all times. When things during the labour didn't go entirely to plan and I ended up needing a C-section I felt completely safe, supported and informed at all times.

I knew that my baby and I where in safe hands at all times and what could have been a somewhat traumatic experience was made a beautiful and positive experience by the wonderful nurses in theatre, doctor's, midwives and the whole team.

Our experience as an inpatient was also good; we were given so much help and advice in those early stages of figuring out how to breastfeed and generally cope with a newborn especially at what appeared to be a very busy period at the hospital. Despite the midwives clearly being under the pump they remained friendly and professional and gave us their valuable time answering all our questions.

The ongoing support by the Midwifery Group Practice once home from the hospital was also marvellous and very reassuring.

The lack of option to have a water birth at Broome hospital is a shame and is available in other small rural hospitals so I am not sure why this option is not available in Broome as it would complement the already marvellous service provided.

There is also a real problem with parking at the hospital as well as a lack of access to anywhere to buy snacks and drinks for relatives if waiting around; why has the vending machine been removed from the waiting room?

Overall our experience has been grand and I am very grateful for the service that we received and Broome Hospital should be very proud of the incredible care it provides with limited resources in a remote location.

Manages the Nursing and Midwifery Services at Broome Hospital

Dear NewMum2018

Thank you very much for your lovely feedback about our services at Broome Hospital. I will pass on your very kind words to all our staff who were involved in making this a lovely experience for you.

We have had previous feedback about providing the option of water birth at Broome Hospital and this is a topic that is under discussion at this time with regards to future planning. Safety is our number one priority and as yet, the physical space in L&D suite cannot accommodate water birthing to the standard necessary.

I note your comments re availability of parking and snacks/drink facilities and couldn't agree more.

The Broome Hospital site does not have much capacity for expansion so we are limited in our ability to offer increased parking however we are reviewing what options are available to increase the capacity.

In respect of the coffee/food issue, I can advise you that until recently we did have vending machines in the ED, but it became clear that the machines could not accommodate healthy options (as required) so they had to be removed.

We are currently exploring options including the potential for external providers to provide trolley or cafe style services. Again, the site limits our ability to have an outlet within the actual building, but we are thinking laterally and hope to have a solution soon.

You are very welcome to contact me to discuss further either via email: helen.fullarton@health.wa.gov.au or mobile: 0408913638
