The pharmacy at KEMH provides a numbered docket when purchasing medical supplies and this is required to be handed over to the Cashier and paid for prior to collecting supplies. However, this system is suspended if the cashier is not on duty as during lunch breaks and at end of day even though the pharmacy is in operation. My concern is what compels people to pay for their supplies if it is released to them when the cashier is not available? The issue is that non-payment could potentially result in write-offs of debt which means public money has been frittered away when recovery could be improved through better systems and processes.
Further, recently upon the cashier resuming duty at 1pm, I probably had a 10-minute wait to pay two bills. The system was slow, and I was handed 4 pieces of paper which I presume were two invoices and two receipts. There were about 7 people waiting to pay bills. The cashier was trying to do her best but I would be very frustrated with inefficient systems in carrying out a very simple duty. In my opinion, North Metro Health Service/KEMH needs to review the cashier's role - provide coverage during lunch breaks, provide better and quicker systems, eliminate paper wastage, improve staff productivity and wellbeing.
