"Gynaecological procedure at Kerang District Hospital"

About: Kerang District Health

(as the patient),

As never having an operation previous, I was relatively anxious. However, the staff involved and processes also put my mind at ease. The appointment prior to my admission was comforting and gave me the opportunity to ask questions that also put me in a more relaxing frame of mind. However, I was asked the same questions, by about 3 other staff and I know each one is obliged to do this and follow procedures. If I was of a greater age I would find this quite onerous. I am quite mindful of waste – I was given a brochure 3 times and offered rubber gloves for a urine sample – not needed. Overall it was a positive experience and should I need further procedures in my life you have put my mind at ease. Thanks for all involved – we live in a lucky country!

Dear zulubc94,

Thank you for taking the time to write about your story in coming to Kerang District Health. I am very pleased that the staff made you feel as comfortable as possible given the natural anxieties in having a surgical procedure.

Your point about being asked the same question a number of times by different staff really interests me, and only earlier this week we had another patient saying a similar thing. There are a lot of checking procedures that are in place to make sure that we are providing the right care, to the right person, in the right way, and in the case of an operation to the right part. We check this on a number of occasions independently to ensure that no error is made.

I am aware of how this must appear to someone like yourself who has never had a theatre procedure done before, and I wonder if you think there would be a better way of doing this rigorous checking. If so I would love to hear about it. My email is ckeogh@kerhosp.vic.gov.au, or by phone on 54509210, or of course through this portal too.

In hospitals, the nurses also do a lot of checking before they give medications, and patients say the same thing- "why are you asking me again my name, address, date of birth, UR number?" This is all to make sure that we are giving the right medication to the right person.

I will speak to the staff about why you got a brochure given to you 3 times- this seems like they were very keen for you to have this information, and I do hope that you explained that you already had a copy and didn't need another. I will get back to you if there was an explanation for this part of your journey that I am not aware of.

Again, thank you for taking the time to tell your story. I know the staff love reading on Patient Opinion who is telling their story, but I will be sure to talk to them about your experience in the next week.

Kind Regards

Chloe
