"Mine and my family's experiences at this health service."

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

I experienced dirty beds with blood spots and God knows on them. Nurses and other staff smoking right outside the door with smoke coming into waiting room and then telling others that they can't smoke within 10 metres of the door. Emergency waiting room was full of rubbish, blood, spew and all sorts all over the floor and cleaner walked straight past it all. There appeared to be no help for a mother that walked in with a very sick baby. She was drenched in vomit from top to toe no vomit bag was given to her. My partner ended up finding one to give to her after constantly asking numerous nurses for one. Staff injecting people in plain view of public waiting room. In my opinion, rude, incapable doctors and staff just wanting to mask my child's pain and illness with panadol. Seems like they don't even know basic procedures or obs.

My grandmother was also taken there last month and they left her stools and urine in a bucket on the floor of her room. Took them over 4 hrs to finally take it away after asked nurse numerous amount of times. It made her feel like absolute rubbish to the point she ended up breaking down crying and shaking with anxiety. Also doctors and nurses seemed to have no idea what was going on, even after reading the charts at the end of the bed. she ended up with an infection while at this hospital. They ended up sending her to RPH (Royal Perth Hospital).

I understand they get really busy and such, but it appears that at times they don't care.

Dear Complaints,

I was very sorry to read the experience you and your family encountered in the Emergency Department at Fiona Stanley Hospital. This is not the experience that I or the Emergency Department would expect their patients and relatives to encounter and thank you for your feedback.

The Emergency Department has strict cleaning protocols and dedicated cleaning staff to ensure that cleaning does occur between patients and a no smoking policy for both staff and patients which includes locations outside of the Emergency Department. I was disappointed to read that these processes were not adhered to when you attended and of the care your grandmother received when she presented to the Emergency Department

I have passed on your story and concerns to the Emergency Department to provide this feedback to staff. If you would prefer to have more specific information, I would encourage you to contact the Fiona Stanley Hospital Patient Family Liaison Service on 6152 4013 or FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au so that your concerns can be investigated further.

Thank you for taking the time to share your story and I hope that your grandmother has since recovered.

Kind regards

Neil Doverty
